cassiopeia (string quartet #2) (2012)

cassiopeia is divided into four sections, each section regarding the constellation Cassiopeia from a different perspective. The first section, scored only for open strings, is our own perspective: serene, impassive, ever-present. The next section, now allowing for open harmonics, zooms in so close as to be inside one of the stars, immersed in a chaotic swirl of super-heated plasma and nuclear fusion. The third section, using all available techniques, pulls back slightly, imagining Cassiopeia as a solar system with five neighboring stars, following the push and pull of gravity and gases between these powerful heavenly bodies. Finally, the fourth section pulls far, far away, so far away that one can see multiple Cassiopeias, each appearing blurry, a small smudge of light in the sky not unlike how we see the Pleiades from Earth.
